Story
KCL Smile Society is an oral health outreach-focused society run by dental students. We support the local and wider community through various volunteering events and oral health awareness initiatives throughout the year.
This year, KCL Smile Society committee will be taking part in a 10km walk during Mouth Cancer Action Month to raise money and awareness for the Mouth Cancer Foundation.
In the UK, every year there are 8,700 new cases of mouth cancer- with the majority of deaths being due to late detection, as the public are not well aware of its associated risks and symptoms. World wide the disease affects 650,000 people per year. However, self-checks take only 2 minutes and could potentially save a life! Mouth Cancer Foundation aims to 'save and improve the lives of patients, carers and survivors, increase awareness and education about all head and neck cancers.
The Mouth Cancer Foundation exists to raise awareness and support for mouth cancer. The charity endeavours to promote, protect, educate and support the public. Informing people on the signs, symptoms, risk factors, facts and figures and key causes of mouth cancer is extremely important, and something which the charity is very passionate about.
