Story
It's not until you go through it yourself that it really hits home. With my mum and aunt both having had breast cancer, I guess I felt it was always inevitable. But I still just didn’t think it would really happen to me. And statistically, I was no more at risk than the next person. Yet, here we are 4 months post op and about to have my last reconstruction and I really wanted something positive to aim for. To get fit again and put the last 6 month behind me.
It's a roller coaster of emotion for sure. I think the thing that shocked me the most is that there is currently no known cure for secondary breast cancer and this is why I want to do this walk.
There is a lot of publicity on breast cancer awareness and screening and I hope that all women check their breasts. And for those lucky enough to have annual screening - go!!! I couldn't feel any of my lumps and nor could the pros!
I feel lucky, all the runners and walkers and fundraisers before me, have enabled the research to allow me to be typing this story. And one day I hope that the walkers and fundraisers of today will enable someone in the future with Secondary breast cancer to feel lucky too.
Please do donate if you can. Andy & I are very grateful for any contribution. He’s my walking buddy ❤️
#update:
I’ve had my final op and am on the road to recovery. Thankfully the though of doing this walk is getting me out the house and walking 🚶♀️➡️
