Story

Grandad joe (1930-2020)

Our grandad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s dementia in 2016. Alzheimer’s is a viscous disease in which it strips a person of their memory whether this be very suddenly or over a long period of time. I can remember going to visit my grandad long before he was diagnosed, and the most vivid memory was of his radiating joy, smile, and laughter. Sadly, after he was diagnosed we began to gradually witness his memory slip away. As a family this was heartbreaking, especially when he no longer remembered our names. We will be forever grateful that he hadn't quite forgotten our faces. He would always smile and knew who we were in his heart. On April 23rd 2020 at the age of 89, Our beloved grandad contracted Covid 19 which coupled with Alzheimers meant his body was unable to fight it. Sadly on May 10th 2020 our wonderful Grandad took his last breath leaving his entire family heartbroken. over a period of 4 years we watched our grandad gradually disappear and as a family we have seen first hand the extremity, vulnerability and the heart ache of this disease. It is for this reason myself, Emma and Emily have decided to take part in an Alzheimer’s society walk/trek where we will be walking 20 miles in a day, to symbolise his passing in 2020, and raising money for Alzheimer’s Dementia in honour of our hero Grandad Joe. If you are able to do so we would really appreciate any donations as every penny counts in the fight back against this horrific disease. Help us to help research into finding a cure.
