Story

In September 2022 we lost my sister Jane, a mother, a daughter, a big sister, an auntie, a cousin, a great friend and an all round good person, to sepsis.

Jane had privately been battling cancer from 2021 and had decided to join our mother in visiting Wales to see our auntie and cousins in Carmarthen and it was during this trip that Jane became unwell and was admitted to Glangwili Hospital. Unfortunately Jane’s condition deteriorated and all immediate family members from as far as Brighton, Manchester and Nice in France came to be at Jane’s side. Our family is a large one and 15 immediate family members including our parents and Jane’s 4 children, were able to be with Jane and support her and one another as she peacefully passed away on the intensive care unit at Glangwili Hospital.

The care Jane received was phenomenal and for that we will always be eternally grateful for all the hard work and efforts made by the nursing and medical team to make Jane’s last days and hours peaceful, pain free and dignified.

We too, will always be thankful to the care we received from the team during the worst time of our lives. The last days we spent with Jane were very precious to us all and we were welcomed into the unit and had the use of the relatives room. The room was very calm, clean and well equipped to deal with unexpected visitors during the day and the night, and without it we would have been at a loss during this very difficult time.

Recently the relatives room has been refurbished, however, the intensive care unit are actively fundraising for its garden restoration and revitalisation and we would love to help fundraiser in a way of thanking the intensive care unit for the care of Jane.

Members of Jane’s family including her 73 year old mother and members of staff from Glangwili intensive care unit, are going to abseil the Spinnaker tower in Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth to help fundraise for the garden.

The event is to take place on 31st August 2024 from 10am and all support on the day would be gratefully appreciated especially by those fearful of heights.

All funds raised will go directly to Hywel Dda Health charities and onto the intensive care unit charitable fund to provide a garden for those families seeking peace in its serenity. Most importantly, also for us, as a family to pass on our appreciation to the staff at Glangwili intensive care unit, in fond memory of our beautiful Jane Bacon.
