Story
December 11th 2008 – a date that is imprinted in every cell of my Being and memories that are filed under Worst Day Of My Life (so far). I was 29 when my Mum, Glenys, died of Liver Cancer. My sister and I only found out about her cancer 27 days before she died so the word shock doesn’t quite describe the impact of what happened that day.
She was taken to Myton Hospice in Warwick the evening before where we were greeted by the most wonderful staff who spoke with kindness and compassion to us all.
Myton isn’t just about the patient. It reaches out to include family and friends. It isn’t just the doctors and nurses who make this hospice an incredible place. There are many people doing their bit – hairdressers, holistic therapists, volunteers - the list is endless.
I wanted to repay the kindness that was shown to my family so years later I volunteered as Massage Therapist at the Day Centre in Rugby. I felt lucky to be able to give a patient brief moments of peace through the simple act of a head or foot massage.
Death is not something society is comfortable with but Myton Hospices are places it doesn’t feel so scary and you never feel alone.
Please support me and my friends and colleagues who decided to join me in this event to raise money for this amazing place so that they can continue to take care of their patients, as well as the families impacted by the devastating news of their loved one reaching the end of their life. They are doing an amazing job at making sure these last moments are the best they can be, let’s help them together to make it possible for as long as we can.
