Radiotherapy is often the unsung hero of cancer treatment, used with the aim of cure or to ease symptoms. It is especially effective due to the cutting edge technology and computing advances in the field. I am fortunate to work at one of the top cancer centres in the UK who have always embraced advanced techniques despite the costs. The last time the government committed to funding for radiotherapy was back in 2016, with £130 million. That is not exactly sofa change, however when a new linac (treatment machine) costs £2.5 million across 52 service providers, that is the equivalent of 1 new machine per radiotherapy centre. The treatment linacs are not the only resource in advanced radiotherapy delivery; complex planning software, quality assurance software, highly skilled staff, and advanced imaging equipment are also important to ensure the linacs are used to maximum effect. Also, the government has mandated that each radiotherapy linac must be replaced after 10 years usage. . . .
Action Radiotherapy is a charity devoted to improving cancer care and raising the profile of radiotherapy, working with the All Party Parliamentary Group for Radiotherapy (AAPRG) to be the voice of cancer patients and their families in parliament, and to improve access to the most advanced radiotherapy available.
Team Clatterbridge has signed up to Action Radiotherapy's #Miles4Radiotherapy campaign to raise money for this charity to fight for better radiotherapy services across the UK!
Our goal is to clock 6213 miles (10,000km) between 1st July and 3rd October! We are walking, swimming, cycling, running, tap dancing our way to the top of the leaderboard. Please sponsor us and help us fundraise for Action Radiotherapy :)
