Story
Before I was born and again shortly before she passed away, my wonderful Nan had breast cancer. In 2013 my mum had to hear the same news when she was diagnosed with it too. Then in 2021, when things were getting 'back to normal' for most people after covid, my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Since then, I've wanted to do something to raise money for Breast Cancer Now and Prostate Cancer UK because, even though it may not seem it, we're still the lucky ones, and it's thanks in part to the work of these charities.
The research funded by Breast Cancer Now and Prostate Cancer UK and the work they do makes it possible for families like mine to live beyond cancer.
13.1 miles on short legs
I've been training since Februrary getting back up to a 5km and beyond. At times reaching 13.1 miles feels impossible, (there's a reason the 100m sprint was my event at school..) but here's hoping I can make it in October and raise some money for these important charities along the way.
10 years in charities
After deciding to take the plunge on a half marathon, I realised that autumn 2024 will mark 10 years since I started my career in the charity sector. So it's fitting that I'm finally attempting one of these after supporting many others through it for the various charities I've worked for (Breast Cancer Now being one of them). On my many training runs and on race day I'll also be thinking of all the supporters and volunteers who've inspired me every working day for the past 10 years.
Please donate what you can to either Breast Cancer Now or Prostate Cancer UK. If you're unsure which charity to donate to, please pick whichever page has the lower amount raised at the time.
