Story
3 years ago Charlie was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney cancer and on 19 November 2020 his right kidney was removed. As you can probably imagine a cancer diagnosis never comes at a good time, but during the depths of Covid it was even less welcome as hospitals faced severe restrictions and the need to avoid contracting Covid was even more imperative to guarantee his operation took place as planned.
After a successful operation, albeit with a slightly bigger hole in his side than expected, Charlie underwent a year of immunotherapy to try to reduce the likelihood of the cancer returning as a participant in a clinical trial.
To commemorate/ celebrate the three year anniversary of Charlie becoming a single-kidneyed human, he will be walking over 100km on the weekend of 18-19 November from ‘coast-to-coast’ along the Devon/Cornwall border to raise money for two charities.
Please consider rewarding this effort by donating to one (or both!) of the charities being supported with this challenge by using the links in the next paragraph or below this section.
You can support Kidney Cancer UK here who part-funded the clinical trial that helped Charlie's treatment.
You can support Reduce Our Carbon here, a charity Charlie volunteers with to both reduce carbon emissions and offer livelihood development for communities most affected by climate change.
And for those who don’t really care about long walks, at the end of the challenge, Charlie will have his hair cut (shaved off) for the first time in over three years, when he last had two kidneys.
Thank you!
