Story

Boards, Bikes and Boots.

A day of fun in the sun to raise funds for Guys Cancer Charity.

Sunday 20th August 2023

09.00am 10km paddleboard along the River Medway from Tonbridge to East Peckham

13.00pm 30km cycle through the local lanes of Paddock Wood and Yalding

15.00pm 10km riverside walk from East Peckham to Tonbridge

We all know that movement and exercise helps to keep us fit and healthy. But did you know it is vital to fight against infection during chemotherapy and helps to reduce the effects of treatment if the patient can manage even a few light exercises each day? By taking part in our favourite activities (in this case paddleboarding, cycling and walking) we are actually reducing the chance of a cancer diagnosis as well as maintaining muscle and bone strength, improving mental health, and having a great time as well.

As an ambassador for Guys Cancer Charity Geoff has spent the last couple of years trying to raise awareness of the incredible work that is done by the teams at Guys Cancer. These dedicated (and very nice 😁) professionals work tirelessly to tailor personal care that enhances the lives of patients through what can often be challenging circumstances due to their treatment.

Join with us on Sunday 20th August to celebrate the incredible work those professionals do, to celebrate the lives of every patient they save, as well as the lives of the ones who are not so lucky, to celebrate the courage every cancer patient has to dig so deep to find, to celebrate the support of their family and friends, and to celebrate YOU, for giving up your time to help with the fight against this wicked disease.

Bring the whole family down to The Paddle Cabin at Branbridges Leisure, East Peckham, Kent TN12 5HF and spend a day in the heart of the beautiful Kent countryside. You can sample the delicious home made food at Branbridges cafe, meet Ziggy and Valentino the friendly goats, or say hello to Spot and Chip, the resident dogs. While you are here why not try your hand at paddleboarding by having a lesson with one of the highly qualified instructors or maybe go for a riverside walk to one of the nearby pubs for lunch. Of course if you want to enter one, two or even all of the challenges you can do so by contacting Geoff at geoff22in22@gmail.com to join the team.

With a focus on patient-centred care, we combine state-of-the art-equipment, novel clinical trials, passionate staff and the most modern cancer research with compassion and effective psychological support so that our patients and their loved ones can feel fully supported throughout their cancer journey. We do this because we know each person and every cancer is unique - we don’t want to treat them all the same. Guy’s is the leading UK provider of care and treatment for people with cancer and we’re dedicated to helping patients navigate what can be the most challenging time of their lives. With all our services located under one roof within our bright and welcoming Cancer Centre, we’re able to offer seamless care every step of the way, from diagnosis, through treatment, and after, in an environment that doesn’t feel like a traditional hospital. We know that the landscape of cancer is changing. More people are being affected, but we’re at an exciting point in time when promising new therapies are being developed and research breakthroughs are waiting to be made. It’s crucial that we continue to fund the innovative research, treatment and exceptional care that takes place at Guy’s to ensure we keep going above and beyond what the NHS alone can provide as we help more people cope with and survive cancer.
