Story
On Thursday, the 27th of March, Cllr Leyla Nayeri stood in Barnsley Town Hall to pass a motion - the Prevention of Inappropriate Behaviour and Sexual Assault through Education and Early Intervention. As part of this motion, she asked that elected members of Barnsley Council take the White Ribbon Promise. Sharing her story in the town hall, she hopes to encourage more discussion of this vital subject and generate more support for the critical work surrounding it.
The vital work of White Ribbon is part of this. Leyla is inviting all councillors of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council to join her and collectively walk or run 4545 miles. The number 4545 miles was picked because in the year to September 2024, there were 4545 reported crimes of sexual offences in South Yorkshire. While not everybody can walk or run a mile in the shoes of these survivors, they can walk or run a mile to help support them.
