Story
We are raising money for 2 charities that have been incredible throughout Annies treatment of cancer- The Breast Centre, Llandough and The City Hospice, Cardiff.
As Just Giving do not facilitate one page for two charities we have set up two pages (one for each) and linked them via a teams page. You can decide which charity you would like to donate to.
Annies story… ...Diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2019 I had a successful mastectomy and was given the all clear, including the lymph nodes, in November 2019. I had incredible care and support from all the wonderful people at the Breast Centre in Llandough, so I decided I would like to give something back to them. My idea was to walk the Welsh Coastal Path and try and raise some money. We all know what happened in March 2020!!
Covid was not going to stop me achieve my goal, so I used the time in lockdown to improve my fitness and began building up the distance I was walking, around my locality. Who knew there were so many foot paths around Peterston Super Ely!
As lockdown restrictions were eased I was walking further each day and managed to get up to 12 miles on some days. There was a slight hiccup when I found a lump in my back in August but it was removed. Surprisingly to everyone involved, it turned out to be a Triple Negative Breast Cancer tumour. However I was fit and ready to take on the Coastal Path. Then as I sat down, at the end of one of the final training walks at the end of September, my leg seemed to give way. A few weeks later it was diagnosed the same type of cancer had returned. It was now that I realised how aggressive Triple Negative Breast Cancer can be. It appears to like me and has now decided to appear in various parts of my body, looking like a primary lung cancer as well as bone tumours in my spine, right shoulder and thigh.
Sadly I did not respond well to treatment which included chemotherapy and the relatively new immunotherapy, so I decided to stop it at the end of February. Since then I have received outstanding care and advice from The City Hospice. However I am not giving up in my attempt to raise funds for the charities that have given me such special care.
My family, headed by my husband Ray, who by his own admission has been ‘a conscientious objector to exercise all his life’, have decided to take on the challenge and show me the beauties and wonders of the Coastal Path.
However the aim now, is to access and enjoy the Welsh Coastal Path either by walking, swimming (where it is safe) bike or scootering (where it is allowed) We would like to encourage as many as possible to help us achieve this goal either by donating or joining in – obviously abiding by Covid restrictions. If you fancy doing any bit of the Coastal Path, by any means you can – a visit, a drink, a picnic- I would love to hear from you. Please post a piccie on to my FB or Instagram page (insert link when we have set it up) so as I can enjoy it with you.
Whilst my family have offered to tow my bed around the Welsh Coastal Path, so as I can achieve my goal of completing it, the City Hospice has advised against this!! I will be following them via Facebook and Instagram… if they work out how to do it! Thank you everyone xx
