Story
“Operation Zephyr” is being organised to purchase and establish a functioning ambulance service in The Gambia. Through research, The Gambia has been deemed to have the most pressing need as currently the numbers of deaths in childbirth, and amputations for minor injuries in The Gambia comes out as the highest. The Emergency Services Aid Charity are therefore fundraising to buy old ambulances from the UK and other European services when they reach their end of lease, to kit them out, and to drive them down to The Gambia. This is where myself and Patrick come in. ESAC approached Police forces across Europe to find people who could volunteer to drive the fleet down. Following their appeal Patrick and I have been chosen to be the representatives for Avon & Somerset Constabulary on this expedition. As well as volunteering our time, the ESAC have given us a fund-raising target of £5000 to add to the kitty for the purchase of these vehicles, equipment, radios and uniforms as well as for the fuel we will need to drive them there.
