Story

Want to join me in making a difference? I'm raising money to benefit Sandy Hook Promise and Dylan's Wings of Change, running a marathon the Chicago Marathon on October 10, 2021. You can also follow me during the race with the 2021 Bank of American Chicago Marathon mobile app. (*The mobile app will be available soon).

Based in Newtown, Connecticut, Sand Hook Promise honors all victims of gun violence by turning tragedy into a moment of transformation by providing programs and practices that protect children from gun violence. Dedicated to the memory of Dylan Hockley, Dylan's Wings of Change and The Wingman program counters the epidemic of social isolation and exclusion that is plaguing communities. By inspiring young people to be the empathetic leaders of the future, The Wingman program helps re-connect people to their essential humanity.

Running the NYC Marathon in 2018 for Sandy Hook Promise was such an amazing experience. After it was over, I wanted to continue giving back. So I ran the NYC Marathon again with the SHP team again in 2019. Earlier that same year, I was asked to run for the Dylan's Wings of Change foundation at the 2019 Ragnar Cape Cod Race. This is where I met Ian Hockley. Ian is the the father of the late Dylan Hockley and founder of Dylan's Wings of Change.

Through my experiences with SHP and Dylan's Wings, I have gotten to know the parents and friends of those who have lost so much. They are my friends now. And running has become a way I can give back and while pursuing my own running dreams.

I thought I would share something I wrote to my Ragnar Cape Cod team in May 2019. This experience was amazing. The race took place over one weekend with relay teams running from Boston and finishing in Cape Cod. This a copy of the group text I wrote when I said goodbye to the everyone:

"....You guys are all amazing people. When I pulled up to Nick and Neasa’s driveway, there was a part of me that was nervous about not really knowing anyone. Coming into a close community of people who have shared such devastating loss. But it didn’t take long for me to feel welcomed. Soon I felt as though I could be my true self, my best self. And not be judged but rather loved unconditionally because we were all there for a common purpose. I can’t thank you all enough for making me feel welcomed and allowing me the opportunity to be free in mind, body and spirit. Thank you so much Nick for your leadership, trust and obviously highly questionable Celebrity “math”.

And throughout my first Ragnar experience I had the pleasure to get to know all of you. My desire for true connections has come true and broadened like Dylan’s wings. The darkness of the world has been lightened by your friendship. You all brought out the best in me....

This experience has changed me. I have evolved more and you have all given me a wonderful perspective on my life, showing me what matters most. Love wins. And through our shared collective, this unwavering togetherness has created a life long memory that I will cherish for the rest of my life. I was honored to be a part of this with you. Humbled by your giving, vulnerability and honesty. As I left Nick and Neasa’s driveway, I left forever changed for the better knowing I have a new found family, blessed by Dylan’s spirit. ...."
