Story
I have been a trustee of ellenor hospice for six years. When I started I knew nothing about hospices. Now I know that they are incredible places, offering a range of wonderful services and playing a fundamental role in UK healthcare. Most hospices receive only limited government funding and fundraising is essential to keep them operating.
I plan to walk approximately 2,500 miles (or 5 million steps) around the coast of England over a total of 6 months in three annual two-month stages starting in April 2023 with the last stage ending in September 2025. I will be funding all the costs of the walk myself. I will start in Gravesend (where ellenor is located) and walk anti-clockwise following the existing/planned route of the English Coastal Path as far as is possible. In the first (2023) stage, I hope to reach the Welsh border through eight counties heading north to the Scottish border, then part of three long-distance paths: St. Cuthbert's Way (from Lindisfarne to Kirk Yetholm), the Pennine Way (from Kirk Yetholm to Hadrian's Wall) and the Wall itself (to Carlisle) and four more counties heading south to Wales. In the second (2024) stage, I will walk the Offa's Dyke long-distance path from the north welsh coast to the Severn Bridge, then along the Avon and Somerset coasts to the start of the South West Coast long distance path and hopefully complete that path. The third (2025) stage will run east from Poole aong the south coast and round Kent to end in Gravesend.
I welcome anyone who wants to join me for any part of the route or for a few hours or a day or two. I'll be updating you along the way on my Facebook page Roger's Long Walk and you can message me from that.
