The theme of Good Shepherd Manor’s first virtual fundraiser is “I Want to Hold Your Hand”. Friends hold each other’s hands. And what a friend the community of GSM has been to us!

For 24 years, the community of GSM has “held hands” with the entire Cusack Family, providing a vigorous and collaborative framework that allows us to freely communicate with each other and work together to maintain a happy, healthy, loving, purposeful life for our brother, Michael.

Many families of people with intellectual challenges face the dilemma of finding a place where their beloved family member can live and thrive – a safe and comforting place where he or she will be allowed to live fully, authentically, happily, and productively. It was no accident or coincidence that our parents were led to search for a place for Michael and found it in Momence IL, at Good Shepherd Manor. It was divine intervention!

Michael has been lovingly welcomed, embraced, empowered, assisted, and supported by every member of this community, beginning with the incomparable Brother Alphonsus of the Hospitaller Brothers of Saint John of God, the administrators and board members, the management team, office staff, nursing and health professionals and workers, teachers, activity leaders and coaches, and his devoted surrogate “moms” and caretakers at Hayes House. His loving housemates and GSM friends literally and figuratively “hold his hand” every day in brotherhood and friendship. How wonderful to know that he is cherished by so many people here! And our family, especially Michael’s four sisters, have also been welcomed, embraced, empowered, assisted, and supported by this very same community!

So we take great joy and pleasure in giving a little of those gifts back, because every resident of Good Shepherd is our brother, and every member of the community is our friend! Won’t you join us?
