Raising money for Flint House Police Rehabilitation and South Central Ambulance Charity

Story

On the 23rd October 2023 I was hit by a car and broke my arm (humerus) into 5 pieces, I broke ribs and my leg (fibula) and tore all the ligaments and tendons in my left ankle. I had to have surgeries on both to piece me together. I wasn't allowed to try and walk until the 11th January 2024.

I was told I would have to wait 2 hours for an ambulance because our NHS is so overwhelmed.

A huge part of my rehabilitation is in no small part to the amazing work of Flint house Police Rehabilitation Centre which exists on donations. I spent 2 weeks there on a focused rehabilitation programme.

I have since given up my time to volunteer to support the South Central Ambulance Service as Community First Responder to be able to get to people in my local area to provide life saving care so that they don't have to wait for potentially too long.

Since beginning my return to fitness I have found cycling on the road a real challenge due to a constant fear of cars wiping me out again. The best way to deal with this is to grab the bull by the horns.

I love my Brompton, and I used to be OK at 24 hour TTs. So the plan is a simple one. 24 hours on a Brompton. The National 24 hr TT Championship on the 27th-28th July.

I'm never going to beat my PB. Nor am I going to get a National Medal. But I am going to be able to know that I can ride my bike again, and hopefully raise awareness of 2 amazing charities.

*UPDATE* Wow! That was hard, but it's done now, so for all you that were waiting to see if I would do it before donating, now is your chance!

I covered 367.69 miles which was beyond my expectations. Guinness won't ratify "folding bicycle records" but it's the furthest known distance in 24 hours on a Brompton - Brompton themselves keep tabs on such things.

I also accidentally got a National medal! I was part of a team, we had the highest combined distance of 3 riders of any other team!

I wouldn't have been able to do it without the help of Chris Murray, Sandra Rutherford and Ben Stowe on the day and Mark Powell in the background, who also rehabilitated me from hospital bed to 24hr TT in 12 weeks. An amazing coach and guy!

Mentions should go to Lucie Gallen for loan of the power meter, Melinda Atkinson for the Cycle Computer and Rollers, and Chris at Lovelo Cycles for quickly turning around a 4 to 12 speed conversion as the awesome Brompton who lent me a T line for the event could only source a 4 speed.

Please 1 last donation if you haven't already £2400 seems fitting doesn't it? ;)

Nick
