Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page, our mum Sue Hughes passed away from Cystic Fibrosis on Thursday 19th August 2021.
Diagnosed in 2011 at the age of 53 with Cystic Fibrosis, Mum spent more and more time as the years went past at the Adult CF Ward 26 at Heartlands Hospital Birmingham. On Thursday 15th May 2014, Mum was lucky enough to receive a phone call from the Transplant Team informing her of a successful match for a Double Lung Transplant. Over the last 7 years, Mum became stronger, independent and able to live her life without the aid of oxygen, giving her, her life back as she said. This allowed her to see her grandchildren grow up, to live a normal life again and go on numerous holidays with our Dad John. I also surprised her at the airport and joined her and my Dad on a weeks holiday in 2018, a moment I will never forget.
Towards the end of 2019 Mum began feeling shortness of breath. After numerous tests and a few stays at the CF Ward at the Heartlands Hospital over the following year and a half, it was in July 2021 when we were informed that Mum's lungs had deteriorated due to the CF genes in her body attacking the new lungs. We knew this would one day happen, the timescale for this could be anything from a few months, 5-10 years to 20+ years.
At the beginning of August 2021 care was being put into place for Mum to come home as we genuinely believed Mum would have a number of months left at the least, unfortunately we were wrong.
At 6:10am on Thursday 19th August 2021, Mum sadly passed away with her family by her side.
One request from our Mum was for people to Donate to the Adult CF Ward 26 at Heartlands Hospital Birmingham. A charity who have helped her so much over the last 10 years. Mum was so grateful for all of the help the nurses, physicians and doctors gave her, she loved them all as friends. Rather than sending flowers for her Funeral, Mum wanted family, friends and anyone who's story has impacted them, to donate directly to the Adult CF Ward 26 at Heartlands Hospital Birmingham.
