Story
MADEX is a research organisation originally set up by Steve and a group of friends when they were medical students to research schistosomiasis in Marolambo, a remote district of Madagascar. Research from the MADEX team has shown that 70% of 2 year olds and 98% of 5-14 year old children are infected with the deadly parasitic disease, which leads to liver scarring, failure and massive gastro-intestinal haemorrhage if untreated.
Now a fully registered charity, the MADEX group has grown over the years. As a result of their earlier research, all school children are now treated annually and a schistosomiasis education programme has been developed. Despite these efforts, the burden of disease from schistosomiasis is still enormous and many young adults in their 20s and 30s are dying. Funding is now required to train local leaders on schistosomiasis control activities, increase the frequency of treatment delivery and research effective means of assessing and treating pre-school aged children.
