About St Augustines College of Theology
St Augustine's Theological College was established in 1959, under the name of the ‘Southwark Ordination Course’, and quickly became a beacon of progressive ordination and theological training. Our heritage is deeply involved with the Church of England’s mission to serve the gospel in ways that that truly embrace people of “all sorts and conditions.” The college was designed to provide an alternative to the traditional residential seminary ordination routes, thus opening formation and theological training to new constituencies. St Augustine’s provided a pathway for ordinands to study part-time, without leaving their local communities and jobs. This was a radical idea, though one that has been widely adopted over the decades since. St Augustine’s eventually expanded its work to include full-time students, the training of licensed lay ministers, and the education of those interested in studying theology without a specific ministerial calling. All these various formational and education pathways meet the needs of students who appreciate the college’s flexibility in scheduling and course management, and its compatibility with employment, family, and church commitments, as well as the availability of online teaching. Today, the education and formation our ordinands, lay ministers, and independent students receive from St Augustine’s continues to be as forward-thinking and sensitive to student circumstances as it was in 1959.
