Story
Eating Disorders are serious mental illnesses which affect 1.6 million men and women across the UK. They have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness, but treatment can work and recovery is possible. Eating Disorders Awareness Week runs from 22/02/16 - 28/02/16.
On Monday the 22nd of February, to kick off B-eat Eating Disorders Awareness Week, Lily Wakefield and Alice Forward will be smashing their own weighing scales to raise money and awareness! So spread the word, give what you can and please join us in our scale smash - whether you have an Eating Disorder or want to support those who do.
Take a picture or film a video of your own scale smash and share it with the hashtag #SMASHEATINGDISORDERS
or submit your photo or video to smasheatingdisorders@hotmail.com to be included in our compilation video at the end of the week.
A bit about Alice... "My eating disorder has been a part of my life for many years, triggered initially by severe depression and other mental illnesses. I have spent the last 18 months in treatment for anorexia nervosa, first as an inpatient, and now currently as a day-patient. I'm smashing my scales for B-eat because for so many years, my life has been ruled by an obsession with numbers, calories, weights and measurements, as a way of not having to think about things which cause me deep pain, and I do not want to live like this anymore. I am on the road to recovery and although it's the hardest thing I've ever had to do, now is the time for me to finally let go of being haunted by numbers and start living again."
A bit about Lily... "I have been battling Anorexia Nervosa for six years, and the whole of my adult life has been ruled by an illness which nearly killed me. I have been through multiple inpatient and day-patient admissions, as well as outpatient treatment. I am currently in a day-patient programme and I finally feel like I have finally reached a point at which I am able to actively work towards recovery, start to make changes and build a life for myself. By smashing my scales, I am letting go of something which has held too much power for too long, and showing myself that this time there is no going back."
