Last year, Shetland's first boccia athlete attend a competition down in Perth representing Shetland. This athlete did not only get the opportunity to meet new people and compete against some of the highest ranked Scottish athletes, but she had the opportunity to represent Shetland in a sport which she may never of had the chance to without boccia.
The club now has a twenty people attend regularly and has been working within the schools to encourage more young people to take up the sport.
Shetland Boccia Club are determined to support individuals with disabilities achieve their potential in the sport of boccia, which can only be achieved by attending competitions on the mainland.
For many of our athletes with disabilities, when traveling off island there is additional considerations including, additional funding needed for a support worker to attend, finding accessible accommodation etc. All funding raised for Shetland Boccia Club will go towards supporting to reduce the financial cost for our athletes attending these competitions.
Without this, some of our athletes may never get to experience what it is like traveling off island to the mainland.
