Story

Update 30/06/2014-

Latest Update...... I DID IT!!!! 3 peaks, 23 hours, knackered knees but I did it. An amazing experience but much, much harder than I expected. Each mountain terrain was different, Ben Nevis was a really steep climb and to our amazement there was two feet of snow at the top in June!! We had to decend Scafell Pike in the dark which was a challenge in itself! Snowdonia pushed us to our final limits by us having to almost rock climb to reach the summit. But dispite all this I wouldn't have changed a thing, knowing that I was raising money for such a worthy and life changing charity.

The photo above was taken at the finishing line at the foot of Snowdonia. As you can see dispite having 10 months of intensive chemo and now on maintainance for 2 years, Jason managed to be there for me (he's the Uncle Fester look alike, pictured with the rest of the Addams family!) On behalf of Jason I would like to take this oppourtunity to thank all those who have donated money on my just giving page, and the people who have stopped me in the street to give me cash. A massive huge thank you to you all. Sharon x

My Story

We all go about our busy everyday lives, trying not to worry about what may or may not happen, until it happens to you, your family, friends or loved ones. That is exactly what happened to our family in September 2013. My brother Jason a husband and a dad of two daughters is a lovely, kind and caring person who would be the first to help others, was diagnosed with leukaemia, he didn’t even see it coming, no illness, tiredness nothing, just a random blood test and his life was put on hold.

Within days he began chemotherapy, the doctors approached the family about the need to find a compatible bone marrow/ stem cells donor. Jason has three sisters and one brother, so we thought rather naively that one of us would be a match, WRONG!!! None of us were a suitable match, it turns out that Jason has a rare bone marrow type, and the lack of donors signed up on the bone marrow register means that this is a common problem. The more people prepared to join up the better the chance is of finding matching donors.

This is where the Anthony Nolan trust comes in, they are a charity that collects, stores and tries to match donors. Its simple to join just go to their website and sign up and they will send you a spit kit, all you have to do is spit in a tube and send it back. Its as easy as that.

One of the most difficult things about watching someone close to you deal with a serious illness is the feeling of being helpless. You try to carry on with your life but everything seems trivial and pointless. This got me thinking about what I could do to really help people in Jason situation and the idea to raise money and awareness for Anthony Nolan was born. How I came to agree to climb the UK’s 3 highest peaks in 24 hours I’m not sure!! But that is what I’ am going to do. So if you would like to sponsor me that would be great.

Can I take this opportunity to thank you all so much for reading my story, this is something we can do to help others.

We are all here together to live life, we are all carriers of life, how can we not give the most amazing gift ever of life, for giving life you will before ever rewarded in life.
