On 26th July 2017 it will be 250 days until The Royal Air Force's 100th Birthday, 1st April 2018. Almost to the day it will also be the 100th Birthday of my current Station, RAF Digby.

When I was in basic training, and for no apparent reason that I can think of, the song 500 Miles by The Proclaimers was like our theme tune... everyone danced like crazy when it came on in the bar & it always makes me smile when I hear it. I'd been trying to think of a charity event I could do to mark the two 100th Birthdays and when I heard that song again recently I had a moment of inspiration:

As you will all likely know, the best bit of that song goes like this:

But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walks a thousand miles
To fall down at your door
Da-dada-da!
Etc.

Therefore, combining all of that; our team of 100 volunteers (plus the odd straggler, hehe) will walk/run/cycle/swim etc. an average of 4 miles per day each over the 250 days leading up to 1st April 2018.

1000 miles - 500 for The RAF and 500 for RAF Digby.

Our walking will be recorded on fitness tracker devices/apps and uploaded to our website.

I have gone back and forth on the choice of charity as I know many people would expect it to be in aid of The RAFBF or RAFA or even LEMR, my Station's nominated charity for this year - and they are all superb charities in their own right, but I have only ever worked in Tri-Service environments and have also been an active member of SSAFA committees for the last 4 years. So, that's why I've chosen SSAFA; a charity dedicated to helping Sailors, Soldiers, Airmen, Veterans and their Families in a multitude of ways.

Thanks for taking the time to read our story,
