We are raising funds for a prize to celebrate the life of Sarah Fletcher - a much loved daughter, sister, partner, and friend - by rewarding students who display compassionate practice in mental health care.  

Growing up in Glasgow with  four much adored siblings, Sarah was an excellent student, who developed a passion for psychology. This led her to study the subject at the University of St. Andrews, where she made countless friends, and enriched the lives of all her peers. Her exceptional intelligence awarded her a well deserved 1st class Honours degree.

Settling in Dundee with her partner, Sarah volunteered with the Hot Chocolate Trust, inspiring young people in the community with her warmth and authenticity. She also spent some much valued time in Iona, experiencing life in the Abbey. 

After exploring a few academic options, she embarked on a degree in mental health nursing at Abertay. It was here she was able to find the pleasure in contributing to the recovery of others that had been missing in research focused courses.  Her compassion was evident in her practice, and despite her own private struggles, patients continuously praised her presence. One recalled how her just taking the time to smile at him gave him hope that everything could be ok. 

Sadly, it was during this time that her own mental health issues became too overwhelming, and she took her own life. 

Sarah was many wonderful things. She was smart, playful, creative, loving, and caring.                                                                                               

She loved to bake bread, and to smash up ceramic plates to turn into mosaics.  

The loss of Sarah has touched many people, and as time ticks along, it seems important to find a meaningful way to celebrate her contribution to the world. 

This prize will reward compassion in developing mental health care professionals, allowing genuine care for those in recovery to shine through as an exceptional and valued quality - the kind of quality which can save lives.
