Bridge to Bridge, Oxford to Venice bike ride · 19 July 2014 to 29 July 2014 ·
If, as the sayings goes, 'education opens doors', then I'm assuming higher education must open vaults! Hertford College, a member of the University of Oxford, aims to do just that. I write to you today with the current fundraising push for 'Access and Diversity'
This July, 2014, 30+ alumni and students from Hertford College will cycle the 1250+ km from Oxford to Venice. Nuts! Why? Well, firstly because the landmark 'Bridge of Sighs' connects the two cities, and the bridge in Oxford, at least, is celebrating it's centenary. And secondly, in order to raise funds improve access to the University of Oxford - one of the premier institutions of higher education in the world. Access and Diversity will improve funds available to those applying from state-schools, in need of hardship bursaries, plus access for those who are disable or otherwise disadvantaged.
Myself and fellow (ex)geographer, James Baillie, are undertaking the ride and planning to sit toward the front of the peleton. We are asking not only for your support, but also petitioning for your donations! All financial donations, plus a healthy gift aid of 25%, will go towards the Access and Diversity scheme. We will be covering all our costs of transportation, equipment, and (large quantities) of food, separately.
The target we have been set to fundraise is ludicrously high (think in the regions of a top-spec racing bike you'll see in the Tour this year!). Don't let that put you off though. Please consider donating whatever you can to my Just Giving page. If you could commit to a small monthly standing order, Hertford would be immensely appreciative! Plus, does the firm you work for offer corporate 'matched giving’?
As Will Hutten - Hertford's new Principal - is suggesting, it's time to 'follow your Hert'! This centenary bike ride is planned to be 'all bridge to bridge, and no sighs'. Thanks for your support!
