About St Peter's Aid for the Needy
S t Peter’s Aid for the Needy (SPAN), which was established in 1974, works with the local Catholic community to raise money and support and to distribute where we see need. This is part of our Christian commitment to our neighbours wherever they are, near and far.Over the years SPAN has raised over one million pounds, mainly through the local Catholic community, and given it to many charities, such as local ones for homeless people, local schools for needy families, Refugee charities and many others. Internationally we support charities in Uganda, Kenya and the Lebanon often through parish connections so that we have direct feedback as to the use of our funds. We give to emergency international appeals following natural disasters etc.
We receive appeals from many different charities and organisations and we use a set of principles, to guide our decisions. Many of our beneficiaries are small charities, where funds can be used as close to the need as possible. One good example is a recent Quiz raised funds for a charity ‘Hope for Children in Ndola, Zambia feeding project’ where school meals are put in place locally to encourage school attendance and improve nutrition which was extremely poor for children in that area. Another example is the ‘House of Light and Hope’ in Beirut, to which Span has been giving support for many years and where now there are still acute problems and needs. Local support workers ask our help for families.
