Story
Huler Group are aiming to cover the 4,444 miles from our HQ in Stoke-on-Trent to Boltgatanga, AfriKids head office in Ghana as part of the 'Miles for Smiles' campaign. We'll be walking, running, cycling, swimming as a team to reach the 4,444 mile goal. Why Miles for Smiles? Despite government efforts to get all children a basic education, many communities in the demonstration districts do not have access to a school and qualified teachers. Due to the distances children have to travel to school - several km each way - girls and younger children often find it too dangerous to go to school. Healthcare services in all three districts are very basic, some communities have no form of health facility and families have to travel to neighbouring communities for treatment. This can be life threatening in emergency situations and very difficult for pregnant women, many of whom travel on motorbikes on uneven roads to access care which can lead to the loss of the baby. Communities have to walk long distances to access water. Children often bear this brunt and miss school to collect water. Due to the lack of boreholes, many families in these regions rely on water from dams, streams and rivers which is untreated. During the dry season, people share their water sources with their livestock which can be dangerous.
