Story

Update on 11.11.22:

This coming Wednesday, 16th November, is Robyn’s 5th birthday. In some ways it’s almost impossible to believe that much time has passed since the day she was born and we heard her cry for the first and last time.

For her 5th birthday, we’re fundraising for a donation of books for her NICU. When she was in the unit, we read out loud to her every day. It’s one of the few things you feel like you can do for your baby in NICU - to let them hear your voices amongst the beeps of machines and constant flow of the ventilators.

We feel it’s a fitting 5th birthday present for her - we’re sure she’d be just like her wee brother Finn in his love of books and stories.

If you are able to, please share and donate, and help us raise enough for every family in the unit to have a supply of books to read to their babies. Due to infection control, new books need to be gifted to every family, so the need is constant!

We set up this funding page after Robyn passed away, and your support has been just incredible. We set the target at £1266 (Robyn’s last recorded weight in grams), and never thought that five years later we’d be seeing the total so far sitting at £14,761. You’ve all helped us in remembering our wee Robyn in such a positive way, and the impact on her NICU can not be underestimated. Thank you all so much.

Update on 16.11.20: Today is Robyn's 3rd birthday. Our amazing wee miracle daughter Robyn Rush was born on the 16th November 2017, 14 weeks early and weighing 460g (just over 1lb).

For the past two years we have marked her birthday by donating a blanket made with love by her Nanny Trish, along with a card and a book, to a baby in NICU who shares her birthday. Due to Covid restrictions we can't do that this year, so instead we got together virtually with friends to record a birthday song. Families and staff in Robyn's unit helped to choose the song - Anna's Lullaby by Hannah Rarity.

Having originally set the target at £1266 (Robyn's last recorded weight in grams) our current fundraising total stands at just over £12,000 - which is incredible. Thank you to all of you who donated after Robyn passed away, and have given since to mark birthdays and Christmases missed.

We've now changed our fundraising target to £13,500 and hope that this special video will continue to raise funds for NICU to mark Robyn's 3rd birthday - at a time when the pandemic impacts families and staff in the unit terribly.

23.1.18: Our amazing wee miracle daughter Robyn Rush arrived on the 16th November 2017, born 14 weeks early and weighing 460g (just over 1lb).

Mummy Jo had complications of IUGR during pregnancy and then developed severe preeclampsia. The brilliant team at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Maternity Unit in Glasgow decided to deliver early in order to save both Jo and baby Robyn.

We enjoyed and cherished nine weeks with Robyn in NICU as she grew in so many ways. She loved her Mummy Jo's milk, she hated a dirty nappy, and most of all she adored skin-to-skin cuddles with both Mummy Katie and Mummy Jo. Although Robyn struggled with her breathing from very early on, she was determined to come off the ventilator, and tried to tell the doctors and nurses this several times with self-extubations and protests against the breathing tube! She showed such strength and character, and taught us so much.

On the 20th January 2018, Robyn caught a very aggressive infection, and despite all her fight and all of the doctors and nurses efforts, she passed away in her Mummies arms. She finally got her tubes out and she looked so beautiful.

We are so incredibly proud of how hard Robyn fought in the short time that she was with us. She got over so many hurdles along the way, and weighed just shy of 3lb when she passed away. She was such a huge personality in a tiny wee body, and she was too good for this world.

Thanks to Robyn we have met so many amazing people who work every day and night in NICU at the QEUH. The doctors and nurses worked with such compassion, humanity and composure, and made us feel included as Robyn's mums despite the situation we found ourselves in. They all made it possible for us to have the privilege of knowing our baby girl for the nine weeks she was here. We would like Robyn's legacy to help more tiny miracle babies, so we would love for anyone who was touched by Robyn's journey to contribute to this fund. We know that it will go such a long way in the incredible and magical place that is the unit.

We've set our fundraising target at Robyn's last weight in grams - 1266g - it would feel so fantastic to meet that. Maybe we can go even further to symbolise the growth that we hoped she would have achieved if she had stayed for longer. Premature babies have such a long and rocky growth journey - surpassing Robyn's last weight would mean so much to us and for other families.

Our Remarkable Rascal, Robyn Rush. 16.11.17 - 20.1.18
