Story

In April 2025, I will be taking on the huge challenge of running the London Landmarks Half Marathon for a special cause, Remember Rufus. Thank you so much in advance for donating whatever you can, it really will make a massive difference to such a wonderful charity and so many families during their time of need.

Here is some information about this amazing charity:

So far, we have delivered 31 CuddleCots to 30 NHS Trusts across the country. A CuddleCot is a cooling blanket which can be placed in a cot, moses basket or even pram to allow grieving families to spend time with their child in a private hospital room, hospice or at home rather than having to visit them in the mortuary/chapel of rest. Each Cuddle Cot costs roughly £1,800.

We have provided CuddleCots to Gynaecology, Labour & Delivery, Neonatal Intensive Care, Pediatric Intensive Care and Pediatric End of Life Community Nursing teams.

We are currently fundraising for two Bereavement Suites at UHCW, where Rufus was born. These are purpose-built, soundproofed, family rooms away from the noise of the post-natal ward which will be used by families saying the hardest goodbye. Sadly, there was no bereavement suite when we spent our time with Rufus, meaning we could hear newborn cries and see families leaving hospital with their carseats. Although being shielded from this wouldn’t have changed the outcome, it would have significantly reduced some of the additional trauma we experienced, and we want to make sure other families are offered some protection from that going forward.

In 2022, there were 2,680 stillbirths in the UK, and 1,924 babies who died in their first 28 days of life. Sadly, the UK is falling way behind comparable countries, and the rate is still not below pre-pandemic levels. Hospitals rely on charities like ours to fund enhanced bereavement support and so your fundraising is hugely important to so many.

RCN 1192076
Remember Rufus has been set up in memory of our beautiful firstborn son, Rufus Harry Jude Key, who was stillborn on 11th October 2020 due to a silent placenta abruption at 39 weeks gestation. Following Rufus' birth, we were able to spend 6 unforgettable days with our son thanks to having access to a Cuddle Cot. During this time we were able to do many of the 'firsts' we had dreamt of with our boy including bath time, his first walk, meeting his grandparents and story. The memories we created are etched in our minds and have helped us immeasurably in our grief process. Our aim is to make sure every parent who faces the devastating reality of losing a child has access to this fantastic equipment which allows families to take time making memories with their precious baby(ies) in a private setting within the hospital, hospice or at even at home. Those extra hours and days can mean wider family members are also able to say goodbye. Without a cuddle cot, a bereaved family will typically only have 10-12 hours with their little one before they are taken away. Many studies have shown that increasing the amount of time parents have with their child(ren) will assist them with processing the mental and emotional difficulties of losing a child. No amount of time will ever be enough, but allowing parents the flexibility and control of managing their final goodbyes in the way that feels best for them is something that all families deserve.
