Our son Callum is 10 years old and has had a severe stammer since he was 3 years old! Callum wants to raise awareness for people who stammer and we will be posting a video everyday up until 22nd October (Stammer awareness day) to show people what it is like living with a stammer (obviously with his permission and these video’s won’t be negative in any way just raising awareness).

Action for stammering children is a charity close to our heart as Callum was lucky enough to have a thorough all day assessment at the Michael Palin Centre for Stammerers in London because of this charity. Had we gone private it would have cost us £5500 but as Callum was referred by the NHS we were able to get funding from this charity! Callum has been working with a Stammer Specialist for 7 and half years  and have tried every therapy they know to fix his stammer! The only thing left was an assessment in London. consultants at the Michael Palin Centre confirmed that Callum’s stammer could not be fixed but they are teaching him strategies to live with it. He is in therapy now for confidence building which is carried out by his Stammer Specialist but is overseen by Michael Palin Centre! 

Callum is described as complexed and as well as living with a stammer, he has a diagnosis of a Language and Fluency disorder, Autism and Tourettes. The stammer will always be at the forefront if his difficulties and the first thing people notice.

His therapy will also include how to deal with teasing and being bullied! Callum has always been Popular with a good set of friends but quite recently he has experienced some taunting and is aware now what others are saying and thinking! His words are “Just don’t stare at me give me time to talk”. If his video’s just raise enough awareness for other children to know that not everyone is the same then we have done our job. It takes huge bravery to do these video’s and we are very proud of him!
