Fundraising for Alzheimer's Society

Story

Alzheimers Society are dedicated to defeating dementia through research. They fund research into the cause, cure, care and prevention of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, to improve treatment.

As you probably know, the word dementia describes a set of symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. Dementia is caused when the brain is damaged by diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease or a series of strokes. Dementia is progressive, which means the symptoms will gradually get worse.

It is estimated that there will be over a million people with dementia by 2021.

Currently two thirds of people with dementia are women.

The proportion of people with dementia doubles for every 5 year age group.

One third of people over 95 have dementia.

60,000 deaths a year are directly attributable to dementia.

Delaying the onset of dementia by 5 years would reduce deaths directly attributable to dementia by 30,000 a year.

The financial cost of dementia to the UK will be over £23 billion in 2012.
