Year of challenges for Pinckey ward

Southampton Marathon 2018 · 22 April 2018 ·
I want to give something back to Pinckney Ward at St.
Georges Hospital as their care and support for my brother was second to none. Pinckney is a specialist children’s ward which treats children with cancer, blood disorders and rare autoimmune conditions. As a family we were and overwhelmed to witness the way they looked after Calum when he was only 7 years old, diagnosed with aplastic anaemia, a disorder of the bone marrow. They supported not only him but the whole family throughout and following his months on the ward.
Many children on the ward are immunocompromised so must stay
in isolation for their stay. Barring medical attention, the little human
interaction they have is through a glass window. It is at a times like these, when young patients are at their most vulnerable and anxious, that they desperately need a parent or loved one beside them. For a parent to sustain that invaluable 24/7 care over their sick child, a pull-out bed in the room gives this carer the opportunity to occasionally get some much needed rest when their child is stable enough to do the same. Unfortunately, there isn’t the funding for “extras” such as a pull-out bed for this to happen and there are currently 4 rooms without, so I am trying to raise enough money to improve this. Purchasing and installing each bed costs around £1000, so your generosity invaluable to the families benefiting from one, something my mum and dad can definitely vouch for!
Over the next year I will be undertaking a series of endurance challenges to raise these funds and awareness for this great cause. The list of events I have completed and will be taking on is as follows:
I’ve done these all in one just giving page, so I don’t keep pestering for each individual event. Donations made are for me to complete all the above challenges. Please feel free to share and get the word out plus you can follow my progress on here and Strava to check I'm actually doing them (https://www.strava.com/athletes/2490227). Any extra money will go towards learning resources for children to get lessons in their cubicles. They also need small rewards for effort, to try and make their illness and treatments that little bit more bearable, and raise their spirits.
