Pete, my beloved husband, was diagnosed with Stage III metastatic melanoma just two years ago. The NHS operated on him, gave him the very best treatment and drugs and he was almost there, almost at the next stage of his amazing recovery. Sadly, he suffered side effects from the medications and in the few weeks he was no longer taking them, this aggressive disease took hold of him and squeezed the very life out of him.
At 70, he'd only just retired, and we were looking forward to finally spending some time together as a couple again. We'd raised our two sons and now it was our time to do what we wanted. Sadly, melanoma stripped him of his life and now all I have are a lifetime of memories, but I am exceedingly grateful for all of those memories and the forty years we spent together.
People tend to be blase about skin cancer, believing that because you can see it on the skin, if you get rid of it, you get rid of the cancer, but there's a dark, underbelly to melanoma. Sadly, it's like an iceberg, there's often more of it under the skin than on top. If it does spread, as it travels around the body it drops its 'seeds' ready to propogate them at some unknown point in time, just when you're not looking. Please help us fund research and provide support to those oncologists and health staff who are actively involved in caring for melanoma patients and their families.
I'd love to be able to leave some kind of legacy for Peter by raising funds and awareness of the devastation this cancer has wrought on individuals and families. Please help us in memory of Peter.
Thank you.
