The Fitzwilliam Museum is the principal museum of the University of Cambridge. Its core purpose is to safeguard the collections, to make them accessible for study and enjoyment and to preserve them for future generations.

Story

Virgin of Sorrow (Mater Dolorosa) by Pedro de Mena

Please help the Fitzwilliam Museum to purchase this masterpiece of 17th century Spanish polychrome wood sculpture so that it can be displayed permanently for everyone to enjoy free of charge.

This work by Pedro de Mena, one of the most accomplished sculptors of the Golden Age, combines virtuoso carving and polychromy, with glass eyes and tears as well as 'real' eyelashes!

Come and see her for yourself displayed now in the Spanish & Flemish Gallery.

We still need to raise £85,000 by the end of September to acquire this rare and beautiful sculpture for the Fitzwilliam.
