Story

29 team mates from Zimmer Biomet will ride 100 miles from head office in Swindon to our warehouse in Bridgend on the 26th and 27th of September to raise money for Solving Kids Cancer (SKC). Every two weeks a child in the UK dies of the childhood cancer neuroblastoma. We need to continue to fund causes like SKC in order to shape tomorrow and create a better world for future generations of children who may be affected by neuroblastoma.

One of our Zimmer Biomet Team unfortunately had a child who lost her battle with neuroblastoma. Shirley has been a huge part of not only our team, but a vital part of hospital teams throughout the north of England, continuing to selflessly delivery support for the patients who needed surgical intervention - all whilst her daughter Beau fought to stave off this brutal disease. Now back at work, Shirley continues to lead the fight in memory of Beau through raising awareness, raising funds and even lobbying the House of Lords for better support for affected children and families.

Shirley has been kind enough to share her story below...

On the 23rd Dec 2021 my world came crashing down. At 4 years old, excited at the prospect of school My beautiful little blue eyed blonde haired little Beau was diagnosed with stage 4 High risk Neuroblastoma; a rare form of childhood cancer.

The treatment was horrific, it was cruel almost archaic 2 & 1/2 years of relentless, invasive, gut wrenching cancer. Chemotherapy, surgery, high dose chemo, stem cell transplant, immunotherapy. As my beautiful little girl skinned down, blew up, battled, cried, stopped talking, stopped eating, stopped playing. As her beautiful blonde hair fell from her head, as her blue eyes turned grey it was hard to differentiate whether it was because of her cancer or the treatment that I had signed all of those documents for her to be subjected to that were the cause.

I nursed my child through some of the most horrific things I have ever witnessed. I have negotiated her submission, pinned her down as she accepted the gruelling treatment on offer in the Uk for children with Neuroblastoma.

On the 4th June 2023, 13 days before her 7th Birthday. My beautiful little girl took her last breath.

SKC are a wonderful charity one with a great ethos, they drive change and fund the important research necessary to combat this horrific disease . They are not just blindly asking for change, this charity is made up of individuals and professionals who understand this landscape, they know what steps are needed to make the ultimate difference for our children. They know what outcomes they want, they know what outcomes we need and they absolutely know how to get us there.

Help them change childhood cancer forever. For our children, for our children’s children. It can’t all be for nothing. For Beau 🤍

We at Zimmer Biomet want to show our continued support for the work Shirley is doing and stand behind her in raising funds for life changing research. Please donate as little or as much as you can to support Shirley and a cause so close to our hearts - Thank you.
