Story
In Bangladesh, maternal mortality is the third leading cause of death. 90% of these deaths are preventable. Maa is an international grassroots charity that aims to improve maternal healthcare in resource-poor settings.
MAA is a student-founded, grassroots charity dedicated to improving the health of mothers in developing countries. We provide medicine, resources and education to these mothers, fathers and young women, in hopes of improving care and empowering the next generation. We run health camps in rural areas of Bangladesh. The mothers who attend then go on to receive follow up treatment every two months from resident doctors. We now also have 3 permanent clinics providing free checks and care! As well as a natural birthing centre in Bangladesh. With your help we can keep these running and expand into more areas to help a greater number of mothers!
MaaMonth was started in 2018 as a national fundraising initiative every February to raise money and allow Maa to continue the work we do in Bangladesh. Universities nationwide compete against each other to raise the most money for Maa within one month and to be crowned MaaMonth Champion! In 2023 we raised £80,000 with 48 universities taking part. This year we have over 30 universities on board including some from outside the UK!
The money raised provides crucial funding for Maa to continue running our clinics and natural birthing centre in rural areas of Bangladesh. We are also piloting our new healthcare app, MaaConnect, with our MedTech specialists in India. We have also started expanding our work internationally, beginning with Afghanistan - by helping Afghan mothers through The Widow Project (TWP). As well as our period poverty project in India where our Maa team have successfully provided reusable sanitary pads.
Support us by taking part in MaaMonth 2024 and help us to revolutionise maternal healthcare!
