Story

We are two school mates, aka the Yukon Rangers, who are planning on undertaking the Yukon 1000, a 1000-mile paddle race from Canada to Alaska which is also known as ‘The World’s toughest survival and endurance race.’ We will be paddling 18 hours a day in some of the most isolated and remote landscape in the world. We will be completely self sufficient when we take on the whitewater, ever changing braided river and the significant bear population.

We were made aware of the race by Charlie’s brother who undertook the challenge in 2022 and were instantly drawn to the idea of undertaking this challenge. However a huge motivation was Hector’s father, Hugh, who lost his battle with prostate cancer September 2023. It was a fight that Hugh fought head on for over 8 years. In the 8 years he had after diagnosis he seized every adventurous opportunity; he climbed 5000m Himalayan peaks, sailed the Southern Ocean and cycled up mountains around the world. He was able to live life to the full for so long thanks to the treatment he received at the Royal Marsden. Sadly, several of Hector and Charlie’s friends have also lost parents to this awful disease over the last 5 years or so, and the Royal Marsden has provided care and support to many of them.

We will be undertaking this adventure that even Hugh thought was mad, and in doing so hope to raise £20,000 for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity to not only help those fighting cancer now but also to support the Royal Marsden’s ground-breaking research into new treatments. We have been incredibly lucky to received a hugely generous £10,000 in matched funding so every pond you donate will be matched up to £10,000!

The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity raises money solely to support The Royal Marsden, a world-leading cancer centre. We ensure our nurses, doctors and research teams can provide the very best care and develop life-saving treatments, which are used across the UK and around the world.

From funding state-of-the-art equipment and groundbreaking research, to creating the very best patient environments, we will never stop looking for ways to improve the lives of people affected by cancer.
