Story
I am proud to be taking part in the Forester’s Hadrian’s Wall Walk 2024 in memory of my amazing dad. A team of 4 of Dad’s fellow Forester’s are completing the Hadrian’s Wall Walk in memory of dad, who we devastatingly lost, aged just 66, suddenly and unexpectedly last April. I’ll be joining them on the journey to represent my dad and to continue his legacy.
Throughout dad’s life he raised money tirelessly for many children’s charities, gave his time, advice and love to care for not only his family but for all those around him and the wider community.
It’s “The Wrigley Ramble” - here’s a snippet from the booklet the Forester’s have put together -
“March 2023 Steve Wrigley stood and delivered his motivational presentation encouraging members to think positively and look ahead. He talked of making plans – and being sure to deliver on them. He talked of ‘bucket lists’: “I’ve got things I want to do, right? One of the things on my list is to walk Hadrian’s Wall,” he said, “and one day I will…” And that got me thinking.
That evening, I sat down with Alan Mackinnon, he of the long walk along the Adriatic coast of Italy, and over a few libations, we determined to take Steve up on his idea and have the three of us do Hadrian’s Wall in aid of Youth Sport Trust. The next day, we challenged Steve to join us. Without missing a beat, he accepted and so the trek was on. But fate intervened and within just a few weeks we had lost Steve, suddenly and unexpectedly. But we quickly determined that we wanted to continue and to dedicate the event to his memory.” Glyn Carpenter
“Sadly you never know the true worth of someone until they become a memory” Alan Mackinnon
Life is incredibly hard without dad and we all miss him with all our hearts. He was such an amazing father, and he was so observant and so deeply supportive and he set us up to win all the time, he was always there for us. The outpouring of love we have received over the last year has been overwhelming in a wonderful way. We’ve lost count of the hundreds of cards and letters, stories which have been relaid to us of life changing things dad did to help his friends, colleagues and community. So many things which dad never mentioned, he did them because he cared about helping people and making a difference. He was a humble man whose priorities were his family and friends and caring for those around him. Material stuff didn’t matter. He was all about people and caring for them by giving his time and love. Being around dad was like being wrapped in a warm blanket, he showed love, respect and valued you.
Dad’s legacy reaches far and wide and we are pleased all monies raised will go to support The Youth Sport Trust. Dad was a champion tennis player in his youth and understood the value of sport so it is fitting the monies raised go to support such a worthwhile cause.
