Story
The National Kidney Federation (NKF), established in 1978, is run by kidney patients to support kidney patients and their families across the UK with two main roles - patient support and campaigning.
The NKF provides the only National Helpline dedicated solely to renal patients, their families and carers, by providing a free-to-call service on 0800 169 0936. The NKF is the UK's largest producer and distributor of kidney-related medical information leaflets with a library of over 200 titles written by nephrologists in simple language for patients.
It runs the only FREE UK Helpline dedicated to kidney patients with two fully trained, experienced advisers providing a 5-day-per-week service to kidney patients, carers, healthcare professionals and renal units.
The Wessex Kidney Centre (WKC) based at Queen Alexandra Hospital is a regional renal and transplant centre, looking after more than 1,500 patients on renal replacement therapy (transplant, haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis) and performing around 100 kidney transplants a year.
The WKC Strava Club is part of our Staff Wellbeing offering. It aims to care for the staff who care for kidney patients through mutual support to reach health and fitness goals in a supportive and fun way. Each month we set ourselves a new challenge.
In June 2024 we will be taking part in NKF’s Best Foot Forward Challenge to walk 70,951 steps during the month. The 70,951 steps represent the amount of people in the UK who are on dialysis or have a kidney transplant.
But being a team, we want to push ourselves. So rather than walking 70,951 in June, we’re going to walk 70,951 steps every single day during June.
That’s 2,128,530 steps!
Please wish us luck and if you can pop a couple of coins in this, our virtual collection tin.
Thank you.
