Story
In January Windflower Forest School had a trip to Cambridge, it was a miserable rainy cold winters day, although we managed to enjoy ourselves with the luxury of a train, coats, brollies, money to buy hot food and drink in the warm museum and we could return to our houses and have a hot bath and get into dry clothes, we were saddened to see so many people less fortunate who were sat on the floor asking for money, the lucky ones on their wet cardboard box for a chair/bed/house.
Although we were trying to teach the forest school children the best way to support a homeless person is to buy them a food voucher. Eli in particular was heartbroken by how life could be so unfair to these people, just before the station getting more and more upset we let him give a gentleman the change from one of our purses. Eli broke down with emotions because the gentleman was so polite and grateful for his few spare pennies, the gentleman then was truly concerned to see Eli so upset. Life has definitely dealt this gentleman a bad hand.
On the train home we decided we really wanted to do something to make a difference to people in this situation. We have taken the time to do some research and found the amazing charity Wintercomfort for the Homeless based in Cambridge https://wintercomfort.org.uk/
Wintercomfort is an advice and support hub who provide all year round services to help find accommodation, food, clothing and, more vitally, support to help rough sleepers learn skills to make long lasting changes to their lives.
Next was the decision on how can we best raise money for this charity to make a difference .. we thought no better way to do it would be to sleepout ourselves. So on Saturday 29th June 2024 the Windflower Forest School families and friends are going to be giving up the luxury of our warm homes and be sleeping in our Forest School woods.
We would love if you could support us by donating as little or as much as you can. To give you an idea of what your money might do have a look at the list below.
£5 will help provide someone sleeping rough with 2 hot meals a day
£10 will help provide essential toiletries at the centre
£15 will pay for essential ingredients for the centres weekly cooking class
£50 would pay for 6 durable head torches.
£200 would pay for 24 foam sleeping mats.
£200 would pay for the coat of 8 heavy duty sleeping bags
£500 would pay for the coat of 20 heavy duty sleeping bags.
