EDF commit to raising a whopping £300,000 through employee fundraising to support Alzheimer’s Society services and ground-breaking dementia research.
This mission is not just important to EDF, but also to me personally. It is estimated that in the UK there are other 800,000 people who have dementia, and it comes in many forms, including Alzheimer's. I have seen the impacts of dementia in my family and community and seen how it affects both the patient and those around them. I believe that this condition is something to be approached with urgency and compassion, and so I want to fully engage with EDF's ambition this year to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society, who provide support to families around the country, fund excellent research, and connect people.
As part of this effort, I am taking part in the Snowdon by Night hike in August with nine fellow EDF colleagues. The event is organised by Discover Adventure and will see us climb the Llanberis Path in the dark and climb 900m elevation. Hiking in the dark is challenging, even on a gradual slope, and may serve as a metaphor for the uncertain path many people with Alzheimer's and their loved ones will have to tread. My hope is that with the money we raise through this event will help some of these people walk it more confidently and securely.
