I am Walking the west highland way for Prostate Cancer UK in memory of my amazing dad Walter Curle(1940 to 2023)
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. More than 52,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year on average – that's 144 men every day. Every 45 minutes one man dies from prostate cancer – that's more than 12,000 men every year. 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.
My Dad Walter Curle born in May 1940, spent his life, devoted to my mum Anne and loving and caring for his family. He built a great business and served other through his local church. He gave of his time and resource to many wonderful causes. He was a loving, caring and extremely generous man. Many people knew him as friend, Jean, Janet, Fiona and me simply knew him as our dad, always there always caring always taking an interested in our lives and the lives of his 16 grand children and 3 great gran children.
In March 2020 just as we headed into the pandemic my dad was diagnosed with advanced Prostate Cancer his PSA was 2771 ug/L. Very little hope was given and the prognosis was not good. The great NHS via Monklands urology department recommended a monthly injection to suppress testosterone. This worked miraculously and very quickly we see a reduction in PSA levels to less than 1. This gave us hope of more time with our dad.
My dad was a fighter and extremely determined he loved life and the treatment gave him a chance to live life with a relatively good degree of quality. Family birthdays, his own 80 birthday celebration all be it with the whole family on zoom, my mum 80th, again on zoom. Two great holidays to his beloved St Andrews, he had the honour of beating the family on the renowned Himalayas putting green. We celebrate Mum and Dads Diamond Wedding in August 2021. And three great family Christmas days.
In January 2023 my dad took ill and after a week in hospital came home for palliative care, he passed away peacefully on 2 March 2023.
He live a full and wonderful life.
It is in my Dads memory that I will walk the West Highland Way, sole and caring all my gear. Starting in Fort William on Tuesday 3rd of October heading south hoping to be in Drymen on Saturday 7th of October where family and friends can join me if they so wish to walk the last 12 mile to Milngavie.
