Story
In November 2022, my dad suffered a major heart attack while on Lake Windermere. The combined efforts of the Great North Air Ambulance Service, alongside the dedicated cardiac team at Cumberland Infirmary (and a little bit of luck) saved his life that day.
The flight time of 15 minutes from scene to hospital (80 minutes by road) gave my dad the fighting chance he needed to pull through. It is safe to say, he wouldn't be here without the vital, rapid care the GNAAS delivered, hence why I will be running Copenhagen Marathon in order to raise donations to keep their helicopter in the air, saving lives.
The GNAAS rescues hundreds of severely injured or ill patients every year throughout the North East, North Yorkshire and Cumbria. Their doctor-led critical care teams deliver life-saving treatments at the scene of the incident, whether that is on a fell top, a roadside or in a city centre. The charity responded to 1,640 callouts last year alone, via their helicopter and emergency response vehicles, where they performed treatments and procedures which can mean the difference between life or death.
