Story
It's three years this week since my mum died, and on Sunday 18th June i'll be putting on my trainers for the first 10k I've done since then. It's going to be a hot plod around Glasgow and I suspect I'll need to channel her stubbornness to get round.
My mum had mobility problems and ultimately became a wheelchair user. Throughout all her challenges she was steadfast in her determination not to be stuck at home.
There was one key thing that made that possible and it was access to inclusive exercise.
The classes mum went to kept her as independent as possible and were the basis of a lot of new friendships. Sadly, research shows that too many disabled people are lonely and that being active could help them live well, but cost and access the right facilities are big stumbling blocks.
We're working hard to make sure those opportunities are available, and that with the right support, that anyone can be active, have fun and make friends.
I'd appreciate your support so that we can help more children and adults believe that they too can take part or that there's life beyond a life changing diagnosis or injury:
"I feel empowered and have got my spark back. When you tell people you Monoski there is no longer “head tilting” pity looks, only puzzled “you can ski” looks, which opens up a conversation that gives me a great sense of pride. There is complete admiration from those who ski and fascination from those who don’t!
All this has only been possible by DSUK - a whole new world where you feel in that moment, you are no longer in the minority group of living a life with a disability."
