Story
I’m Vicki, mummy to two beautiful children Harry now 7 and Millie 2.
In February 2022, age 5 Harry was diagnosed with a Medulloblastoma, an aggressive cancerous brain tumour.
For a few weeks prior to his diagnoses we had noticed he was occasionally off balance and was sick one day per week, we visited our GP twice, and as a reassurance we’re referred to paediatrics, however Harry was diagnosed before his appointment.
On the day of diagnoses, we received a call from Harry’s school advising he had sat down in the reading corner & unable to stand up. After a long wait in A&E he had a scan late that night and the ‘Goblin’ (as Harry calls it) was discovered.
And so the journey began… harry had emergency surgery within hours, with surgeons spending over 10 hours removing the tumour. Harry’s recovery was slow after developing Posteria Fossa Syndrome he lost his ability to speak or walk.
After a mad dash to get Millie a passport (now 5 weeks old) , 4 weeks after surgery the NHS flew us to Germany where Harry received 31 sessions of Protein Bean Therapy, before returning to Leeds to start chemo.
Now she 7, he’s had some clear scans, and although he had some life long challenges, and gets easily frustrated, he smiles every day. He has already overcome more in the last two years than most will or should in a lifetime. He is a true fighter, always the joker and generally an amazing, beautiful little boy.
Harry’s will be forever my inspiration, his courage and infectious smile keep us all strong. Our gratitude for the doctors and nurses cannot be put into words, but the treatment Harry and others like him has not changed in decades, isn’t de signed for children and has resulted in life long debilitating consequences.
I’ve decided to take on this challenge raising funds for research to help others have more effective and kinder treatments.
Taking place during Brain Tumour Awareness Month, im taking on a six-day adventure trekking the Sahara dessert, including two full days and two half days trekking across ancient dried-up river beds, ever-changing dunes and vast sun-baked plains.
I’m not underestimating how challenging this trek is, but Harry is my inspiration and will keep me going! He’s super excited to hear about my adventures in the desert!
I’m aiming to raise £2740- which is one days research!
Andy & I have funded my place so every penny raised goes towards research.
