Story
I will be taking part in Resurgo's Walk 20 Challenge to mark 20 years of Resurgo by walking 20 kilometres, following the route from their furthermost east to west London Spear locations. Since its inception 20 years ago, Resurgo has supported more than 8500 young people facing barriers to work to get into sustainable employment, through the Spear Programme.
The Spear Programme (a branch of Resurgo) helps people between the ages of 16-24 years old, overcome barriers to employment such as mental health difficulties, homelessness or having a criminal record, to get into work and succeed once they are there. The statistic that reigns strong every year is that 75% of those who undertake the programme not only find employment but remain in their jobs a year later, demonstrating the ability of this programme to change the course of an individual’s life in the long term.
The Spear Programme was a lifeline for me around 4 years ago when I was struggling with my mental health and unable to find work. I was battling depression and anxiety and struggled with basic things like leaving my room, let alone feeling able to attend interviews or apply for jobs. Through their support, I was successful in applying for an apprenticeship and the rest is history. I now support the charity as a youth ambassador and I'm passionate about ensuring future generations can access the same resources. I am confident that I would not be where I am today without their help and I want to extend their legacy to all young people facing barriers to employment.
I'm excited to be taking part in this challenge, to help even more young people be equipped with the skills and mindset they need to succeed and to fulfil their enormous potential. While we celebrate all that Resurgo has achieved over the last 20 years, we are also looking ahead to the next 20. We know that we will need your help to continue the work that the charity does so incredibly well!
