Thank you for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page. We are participating in the Hoober Homes Doncaster City 10K on November 26th, 2023 to raise funds for Doncaster Deaf Trust.
Myself as a parent and Laura, an Auntie of a child with profound hearing loss, this cause is close to our hearts. ALL THE FUNDS RAISED will go towards replacing the outdoor playing equipment and anything else the school needs.
This is our story......
Victoria
Doncaster School for the Deaf has been revolutionary for my son and many others like him in his educational journey. Finley was born 12 weeks premature and as a result, he had profound hearing loss. In 2017, Finley underwent surgery and was fitted with bilateral cochlear implants. It was a difficult journey for him as he didn't tolerate the processors and refused to wear them, the sight of them made him anxious and he used to hide them in a cupboard.
However, in December 2021, Finley and I visited Doncaster School for the Deaf and from the moment we stepped foot through the door, we both knew this is where he had to go. When he got home the first thing he did was go to the cupboard, get out his processors and put them on....I cried!!
Since starting in September 2022, Finley is in a school setting where he belongs, he has a peer group, who in his eyes 'are the same as him', he feels included and not excluded.
Finley has made massive progress, not only academically but socially as well, he now wears his processors, which is a major step forward. This would not have happened if it wasn't for Doncaster Deaf school and all the amazing staff.
HOWEVER....WHY WOULD I DO THIS ALONE?? SO I SENT A MESSAGE TO MY SISTER!!
Laura
When my sister asked me ‘are you up for running a 10k’ her lazy sister (me) replied ‘NO THANKS’ 😂 !! She then went on to say ‘not even to raise money for Finley’s school?’ How could I say no😩,so this two left footed Auntie agreed and is about to run her first 10k 🫣
As my sister has already written, my gorgeous nephew Finley, now aged 12, was born at 27 weeks. Along with other major hurdles, Finley was born deaf. When he was fitted with cochlear implants, a life in silence was something Finley had very much gotten used to and so he hated to wear them.
After a long HARD battle, my sister finally got him into a school purely for deaf children and ‘’wow’’ what a huge difference this has had on his life. He is now part of a community, has his own friends, isn’t a minority but now a ‘majority.’ All the teachers sign, his friends all sign and without this school Finley wouldn’t have half the opportunities he’s had already. He’s grown in confidence, he’s also hearing (small amounts BUT HES HEARING 🎉)!He has so much more growing to do and this is why ‘Doncaster school for the deaf’ is absolutely invaluable for many children like Finley.
It would be an absolute honour for us to raise as much as we possibly can for this amazing school which is why were hoping that you maybe able to sponsor us no matter how big or small.
We’re so grateful and excited for the finish line 😆
With much much love and gratitude
