Story
Student Council has nominated The British Red Cross as UUSU's chosen charity for 2024.
The Ulster University Students’ Union, and many of our members, have been distressed by the events which have occurred in Israel and Gaza since the 7th October.
As in most conflicts, civilian populations have been disproportionately affected, including children, people who are sick, people with disabilities, and older people.
UUSU has noted with concern the statements from relevant UN agencies and non-governmental organisations, highlighting the displacement of civilian populations, the restrictions on humanitarian aid entering Gaza, and the blocking of vital resources including fuel and water.
A peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine will require a co-ordinated international effort, however, the immediate priority of all parties must be the preservation of civilian life and infrastructure in line with International Humanitarian Law.
The Student Executive of the Ulster University Students’ Union recognises the need for:
• an immediate ceasefire in Gaza to end the disproportionate impact on the civilian population
• the unconditional release of all people held as hostages
• unconstrained humanitarian relief to be allowed access to Gaza
UUSU is committed to supporting humanitarian relief in Gaza and to help with this, it has been decided that all funds raised throughout the year will go towards the Israel and Occupied Palestinian Territory Appeal organised by the British Red Cross.
