Story
PKU is a rare disease that as brothers want to conquer. To conquer this disease, brothers Chris and Matt will be matching up to $10,000 to the Dr Jane Breck PKU Endowment. Please donate this National PKU Phenylketonuria Awareness Day!
Here is our story:
Matthew:
My journey with UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh began when I was formally diagnosed with PKU at around three weeks old. Because of caring and devoted doctors and dieticians at UPMC Children’s Hospital, I was able to be treated for this genetic disorder and develop relatively good health over time along with a quality life.
Philanthropy, as I understand it, means “generosity in all its forms” and my family and I have certainly benefited from others’ generosity. I believe that it’s now time to gratefully give back and this endowment is an opportunity for many with PKU to benefit from the loving care of doctors, like Dr. Jane Breck who treated me, and the researcher who continues to seek new ways of treatment, especially here at UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Chris:
There was a brief time in my memory when I didn’t know the term PKU, but I was very young. My brother, Matthew, was born at a time before PKU was part of the blood test performed at birth. For 45 years I watched my brother adapt to his PKU but never let it hold him back. He had the strictest of diets as a child, watching it loosen up in his teenage years, only to discover that a lifelong commitment to a diet was necessary.
His life with PKU has been coupled with the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and Dr. Jane Breck. I don’t think we can overstate that without CHP and Dr. Breck, Matthew would have had a very different life experience.
