We empower refugees and asylum seekers to thrive as they rebuild their lives

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit Joseph, Diana and Efrem's JustGiving page. They're taking part in the Derby 10K so that other refugees can be supported to thrive as they rebuild their lives.

Joseph shared some of his story:

"Upbeat Communities is a place of hope and support. They welcome me with a smile and a helping hand. It’s a place where I can make a network, connect with the community, and overcome the culture shock.

In my first one or two weeks in the UK, Upbeat helped me to feel settled. Everybody there understands the do’s and don’ts in the UK and it’s helpful. I like the organized and welcoming atmosphere.

I used to volunteer on Mondays and discuss my background in Biotechnology with another volunteer, who used to be a doctor. I told her I was planning to study in university and the next day she came with a written recommendation for me to apply to the Nottingham Trent University. So I had a go and I got an offer to study MSc. in Biomedical Science! My tutor at Upbeat has also been helping me prepare. Upbeat has been helping me with everything.

Every time I volunteer at Upbeat I develop my skills and experience. I’m so happy to be involved in the life reinvention of refugees because I experienced the same situation. If I am helping others, I am helping myself. That’s what I believe."
